Issues with login credentials for network access...

In order to access network content you must have a password set on your HTPC.  Once you have the password set you should probably set Windows up to automatically login on boot.  Here is a guide to do that:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/make-windows-vista-log-on-automatically/

You would then input your username and password for your HTPC on the general settings tab.

Please see below for other tips and tricks....

Re: How do I access network content without a password?

Mysteron
Having problems getting network access to work. Stop the service, add my usual login and password but get the error
"Cannot start service RecordedTVHDService on computer ',', - Error is due to a login failure"
when I press Save settings button.

I am trying to get recorded tv from a Windows Home Server PC as well as my main HTPC. Plugin is installed on a secondary HTPC.

Any help would be appreciated

What username/password are you inputting?  It needs to be the credentials for that specific local machine and NOT any home server or other credentials.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. As Windows Home Server seems to like and asks for the account details for attached computers to match, all the computers including the home server are setup with the same account and username and that is what I am inputting. From the error message it looks as though it should tell me what PC it can’t log on to but seems to miss out its name within the quotes. I have tried deleting one share at a time and get the same error. It’s only when I try to access the local PC’s Recorded TV only that the Save settings works and that is with the password and username removed. Seems odd.

Hi

I had a similar issue - WHS etc. What I did to solve it was change the Logon account for the actual Recorded TV service to use the account I use for all my WHS clients. Even though it may look like the service is already using the correct account, re-type it and then when you click "OK", Windows should say something about adding the right to logon as a service. Once I did this, I could enter the same account into the Recorded TV GUI and the service then started and all is good.

I still get this error:  "Cannot start service RecordedTVHDService on computer ',', - Error is due to a login failure"
I've tried both accounts and their passwords for the local HTPC as well as the login to my remote share with TV shows (which is the same local account username and password).
It doesn't seem to work with windows shares or a SMB share on my Mac.  I'm not sure what to try next.

Did you try the suggestion from TerminalMan? That fixed it for me.
On Win7 you need to go to Control Panel-System and Security-Administrative Tools-Services. Find the recoredTvHD service. right click on it and select properties. Select log on tab then enter the login credentials there. You should with luck be good to go.

Try typing your username in the form '.\Username' or 'Computer\Username'.

This is more 'Qualified' username format, generally required for many services..

I already add the ".\" in my code if the user doesn't add it, but you could try the "Computer\Username" or "Domain\Username" (if you are part of a domain) if you are still having problems after trying the suggestions above.

thanks terminalman.  Once I went into the service itself and redid the username and password there it worked.  Great work.  Thanks.

FYI - I finally found the fix for this for new users and I will be in the next release. So if you have any release greater than 1.6.12 you will not have to manually save the password in the services interface.

I had the same problem with the current beta. looking through the event logs showed that the account running MC didn't have Log On as a service rights. So, even though I was entering the correct user/pass in Recorded TV HD settings, it still wouldn't start the service. A quick change to the local security policy to add the account and all is well. I've since purchased the app.

RE: How do I access network content without a password?

I just installed the trial on two PC's in my home.  I love the interface.  The first PC is where I do all my recording, the second just accesses shows via my homegroup network.  I added a password to my main computer just for your program, but when I try and input my computer name, and password I get an error.  "Error setting privilege for user to login as a service".   I guess I'm not sure how to implement the fixes people here say have worked.  I'll be buying the home licence if I can get this sorted out.

rustle,

Make sure the username and password you are typing in is for the local machine that your typing it in at (not the server). It doesn't matter what the password is for the "server" machine as long as the user account that you are typing in the password to has access to it.

Re: How do I access network content without a password?

Paxion
Been running RTVHD for about 3 weeks now.

I followed the instructions in this FAQ and still can't get RTVHD to work on client machines as discussed here.

however, I found a work around.

So here is my set up all W7 machines

Name/User name password
Server/Server:No password: works as a server with 4 ceton tuners and about 12TB of Bluray storage
Livingroom: Vizio: No password  Client machine (sitting behind a vizio tv)
Livingroom: Record: password:

When I originally set up up RTVHD I had no password on Vizio. So I added one and attempted to use those credentials. it didn't matter how much I tried I couldn't get it to work. So I set up another user account from the control panel while logged in as Vizio, named it Record and gave it the password of password. I then added these credentials and still couldn't get RTVHD to work. I then switched users and allowed windows to finish setting up Record. Switched back to Vizio and BAMMM! it worked.

Just thought i'd share, maybe you can explain what I did wrong in the first place or maybe it will help someone who is about ready to give up on this application.
